The PGME team and education faculty nominated Carys for her openness and courage in presenting at a Grand Round about the mental health challenges that she had experienced as a foundation trainee. She offered both advice and self care to not only all Drs in training in attendance, but also to the consultants in what signs to look out for, and to be confident in asking trainees directly if they are okay.
Following the feedback from the Grand Round, Carys attended every induction for new Drs in training and talked again openly about her experience and encouraged trainees to raise concerns they had and to ask for help.
She introduced her dog Penny to us, who has now become a part of the team, visiting and providing welfare support to the doctors in training, and now the wider Trust team who come and visit her. She has also been instrumental in setting up a mentoring programme for our F1s, and appointed a multi-disciplinary team to provide this.
