What is an Apprenticeship?

An Apprenticeship is a vocational training programme which allows the
apprentice to:

• learn & train in a real work environment
• gain valuable work experience
• develop job specific skills
• earn whilst they learn
• achieve nationally recognised qualifications

On completion of the Apprenticeship programme the Apprentice will be able to carry out the
full range of tasks in a range of circumstances appropriate to that job, confidently and
competently to the national standard as determined by the applicable sector.

What does an Apprenticeship consist of?

An Apprenticeship framework typically contains the following components:

• Functional skills qualifications ( English, Maths & ICT)
• Technical Certificate covering knowledge & understanding (What I must KNOW)
• National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) covering Skills & Competence (What I must be
able to DO)
• Personal Learning & Thinking Skills

Apprenticeships are available at these Levels:

Intermediate

Equivalent to 5 A-C GCSE passes

Advanced

Equivalent to 2 A level passes

Higher

Equivalent to degree level

How are they delivered?

Learning takes place on the job with some Apprenticeships additionally requiring day release
to attend a course of study at a local training provider.

Additional support is provided by an Assessor appointed by the training provider. The
Assessor will visit the workplace regularly to work with the Apprentice and assess their
competence against stated performance & knowledge criteria. The Assessor will set tasks
for the Apprentice to learn, complete and gather evidence of between visits.

Apprentices will be allocated time away from the workplace each week to undertake study
and compile evidence for their qualification.

Apprenticeships at SASH

The Trust is committed to offering Apprenticeships wherever we can in our band 1-4 posts.
This is in line with the Government pledge to create 3 million Apprenticeships by 2020.

Apprenticeships also fit within the widening access agenda to help with the recruitment of
staff from our local community.

The Trust benefits from the ability to ‘grow our own’ future employees who will then go on to
apply for permanent employment with the Trust, having benefited from the solid foundations
gained during their Apprenticeship

Our Apprentices benefit:

• from the work experience gained in a live work environment
• by putting into practice & enhancing the knowledge & skills acquired
• from working with colleagues & assessors dedicated to assisting their development
• by not having to fund their own qualifications
• from the ability to earn whilst they learn
• by achieving nationally recognised qualifications
• by being ideally placed to secure permanent employment with the Trust upon completion of
their Apprenticeship
