Doctor in training personal account of management of mental health illness
Core medical trainee Dr Carys Fleming openly shares and highlights the medical profession’s ‘tick box’ approach to trainee wellbeing, and questions whether it can be doing more to recognise health issues in students whose focus is on helping others.
Sleep Deprivation and Fatigue
We understand the challenges that supporting our patients 24 hours a day, 365 days a year has on our workforce, who are required to work varying shift patterns to provide this care.We are working hard to review rotas, and rest and facilities available to you, to support you as much as possible in keeping you fit and well.
Above you will find an interesting video to watch, which is 16 minutes long, which explains in more detail how working nights affects your ability to function normally.
There is also an article by Michael Farquhar giving tips and advice on how to manage the effects of shift work on your health and a report by the BMA on fatigue and sleep deprivation, which we encourage you all to read.
Some of this will get covered in your induction, but there will not be time for all articles to be discussed
New Parent Group
At SASH we are keen to support all new parent’s with the challenge of managing a new child into their lives as well as juggling a busy training rotation.
Those who choose to join this group meet and support each other via WhatsApp. Strategic Medical Education Manager Tina Suttle-Smith can help with providing local advice, advice on less than full time working, and links to additional support groups including occupational health.
