Study Leave Budgets & Allowances

Study Leave Home

All expenses must be claimed online within 90-days of attending the course in line with Trust policy.

Doctors in Training

Applications for all study leave must be applied for and approved before attendance. This includes any study leave for non-working days, as under the 2019 amendments to the 2016 Junior Doctors Contract this will now be compensated with TOIL or payment, so an application form will be required for this.

You can claim for any mandated and optional courses on your approved speciality course list. You can find your course list on the LASE PGMDE Support portal, under your speciality page. Funding for discretionary courses will be reviewed by HEE on a case-by-case basis.

HEE has imposed caps on expenses as per the following:

Foundation doctors

  • F1: 15 days study leave
    • Takes place in the form of mandatory Trust teaching/training/simulation.
    • You can “borrow” up to 5-days from F2 budget for tasters to inform future career decision making.
    • If you are presenting at a conference, you can apply for discretionary leave but, if granted, you cannot apply for additional discretionary leave in F2.
    • Taster/discretionarycourse information will be shared on Transfer of Information forms to your F2 Trust.
  • F2: 30 days study leave
    • The majority of this will take place in the form of mandatory Trust teaching/training/simulation. You can take one course linked to your career choice, but can also include an additional discretionary course as long as it is not a course you could later attend as part of your specialty training (visit the relevant specialty pages on the LASE PGMDE Support portal).
    • Discretionary courses require additional authorisation from your F2 TPD.
    • Does not include private study leave, but the day of the exam can be taken.
    • Professional leave given for up to 2 specialty training applications, or up to 2 days in total for Trust post applications.

Specialty doctors & Dental trainees

  • 30 days study leave
    • Includes mandatory Trust teaching/training/simulation/regional training days (expected to account for approx. 20-days), as well as courses listed on the HEE approved list (approx. 10-days of personal-choice).
    • Out of this you can take 5 working days private study leave up to twice a year.
    • In addition to this, you can take the day of the exam up to twice a year.
    • Doctors with full exams can negotiate more personal choices with the College Tutor, noting agreement must be sent to [email protected].
