Urology is the specialty that deals with the diagnosis, evaluation and management of diseases of the genitourinary tract including all aspects of cancer of the kidney, urotelium, bladder, penis and testicles.

A large proportion of the urological work load involves benign conditions such as incontinence, stone disease and infertility. It involves dealing with patients of all ages and both sexes

Mr Tim Campbell-Smith is lead clinician for inflammatory bowel disease surgery and was appointed as a consultant surgeon at SASH in May 2010. He trained at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals medical school and underwent specialist surgical registrar surgical training in the South West Thames region. Following entry on to the specialist register he spent 18 months as the London colorectal fellow at UCH and St Thomas’ gaining further sub-specialty training in inflammatory bowel disease surgery, laparoscopic colorectal surgery and intestinal failure. He runs a joint medical/surgical IBD clinic at East Surrey as well as general surgical/colorectal clinics. He performs open & laparoscopic colorectal surgery together with the enhanced recovery program and has regular days case surgery and endoscopy lists.

Mr Shahid Khan qualified from the King Edward Medical University (Mayo Hospital) in 1996 and trained at various prestigious urology institutions, which include the stone units at the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh, St George’s Hospital, Tooting and Guy’s Hospital, London. After completing his specialist training in urology at the London/Kent Sussex & Surrey deanery, he developed his interest in urinary stone disease and endo-urology.

He was awarded the Fellowship in Urology from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2010. In 2011, he also obtained a Fellowship from the European Board of Urology, Belgium.

In 2014, he was appointed as a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (SASH) sub-specializing in urinary tract stone disease. He is also the clinical stone lead and has been responsible for establishing the lithotripsy service at Crawley Hospital.

Mr Khan’s expertise includes percutaneous renal surgery, extra-corporeal lithotripsy and ureterorenoscopy. Furthermore, he has also developed the Template Prostate Biopsy Service and more than 150 patients have undergone this procedure at SASH.

Apart from being the audit lead of the unit, he has wide academic interests with various publications on the management of LUTS, erectile dysfunction, bladder/prostate cancer diagnostics and percutaneous management of renal stone disease.

Mr. Khan’s other clinical interests include minimally invasive treatments for prostatic disease, endoscopic management of superficial bladder cancers, urological laser surgery and erectile dysfunction.

Prior to joining Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust Mr Maheswaran undertook a National Bariatric Surgical Fellowship at St. Richard’s Hospital, Chichester, a Centre of Excellence in Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery where he now holds an honorary contract. Working alongside the St.Richard’s multi- disciplinary team he provides a full Obesity Service. His other specialities include endoscopy, gall bladder disease, pancreatitis, anti-reflux and hernia surgery. He collaborates with colleague’s to provide a Laparoscopic Adrenalectomy, Complex Hernia Repair and Abdominal Wall Reconstruction Service. Both elective and emergency operations are undertaken.

Mr Maheswaran is particularly interested in Medical Education having undertaken two Master’s Degrees and a London Deanery Fellowship in Education where he set up and delivered simulation training in order to improve patient safety and outcomes and is the Training Programme Director for Core Surgery Trainees in Kent, Surrey and Sussex. He is also Clinical Lead for the Trust Cost Improvement Program.

Mr Maheswaran is driven to deliver high quality, safe, patient centred care to the local community being born and raised in Redhill where his parents had combined over 50 years of service within the Trust. He very much regards the community as his friends and family.

Professional memberships include the Association of Upper GI Surgeons (AUGIS), British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS), Society of American Gastroenterology and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).
